<p>To address the plight of &nbsp;manual scavengers, who risk their lives on an everyday basis to clean the sewage systems, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation administration has made a significant move. The civic body has planned to soon deploy robots to clean the clogged drains and sewer pits in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Over the years, there have been a number of scavenging fatalities in Ghaziabad. Information from authorities highlighted that in July 2018, three people lost their lives after falling into a well at a sewage pumping station in Loni. Moreover, five manual scavengers died in August 2019 while cleaning a sewer in Nandagram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The GMC authorities said that they are working on a plan to minimise human interference during the annual cleaning of drains and sewer pits before the onset of monsoon.</p>

<h3>Robot trial process cost around 39.52 lakhs to GMC&nbsp;</h3>

<p>At Govindpuram in the Kavinagar zone of Ghaziabad, a robotic cleaning machine trial was conducted on 9 June. The cost of the overall process is said to be around Rs 39.52 lakh. As per the information from the authorities, Ghaziabad has 468 drains, of which 73 are important. As far as the number of robots is concerned, civic officials mentioned the ability of 39 lakh robots to be effective in terms of manpower and time. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Manual scavenging is not just a cumbersome process but also exposes sanitation workers to toxic gases that can prove fatal,” said Anand Tripathi, general manager of GMC’s water works department.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>A bit on Bandicoot, Kerala’s first sewage cleaning robot&nbsp;</h3>

<p>In February 2023, after introducing the robotic scavenger, 'Bandicoot,' Kerala became the first state in the nation to deploy robotic technology to clean all of its commissioned manholes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the time of its launch, the civic officials who were present at the demonstration of Bandicoot at the temple town of Kerala, Guruvayur stated that the robot may prove to be a safer and more effective substitute for manual scavenging, which is not only dangerous but also undermines sanitation workers' dignity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bandicoot can help clean confined spaces such as sewers, manholes, sewer wells, and stormwater manholes. “The multi-armed robot first assesses the level of toxic gases in the sewer pits and flushes it out till the volume of gases like ammonia, sulphur dioxide, and methane reaches permissible limits,” said Tripathi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While expressing about Bandicoot, Tripathi further added that when a manhole is completely filled, it might take up to 20 minutes to retrieve waste in the form of sludge and wastewater.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The robots are fitted with a tray on which the sludge gets deposited, which is then dumped into an enclosed loader truck to be disposed of at a designated site,” mentioned Tripathi in the wake of a recent Ghaziabad authorities decision. &nbsp;</p>

The menu items proposed by Kernel would include a broad variety of foods, including pizza, spaghetti, hamburgers, salads, acai bowls, and wraps. <p>As per reports, Figure, an AI startup, founded by Brett Adcock, has raised $70 million from investors in Series A funding, for building general-purpose humanoids.</p>

<p>The said funding will be used to build a Figure 01 humanoid, develop its AI data pipeline for autonomous operations as well as drive toward commercialisation. In other words, the new funding will be used to drive the development and manufacturing of the company's first autonomous humanoid, which is likely to make its debut in the coming few months.</p>

<p>It is pointed out that the above-mentioned funding round was led by Parkway Venture Capital. Other participating investors include Aliya Capital, Bold Ventures, Tamarack Global, FJ Labs, etc. Also, the valuation of the company has not been disclosed yet, but as per sources, the firm's value has been put at over $400 million.</p>

<p>In the words of its founder, Brett Adcock, "We believe general-purpose humanoid robots have far more potential than single-purpose robots." He further added, "The deployment into the workforce can help address labor shortages and over time lead the way in eliminating the need for unsafe and undesirable jobs."</p>

<p>California-based Figure is focused on building general-purpose humanoid robots that would be capable of working in different environments and at the same time, can handle a variety of tasks. The company is in talks with retailers regarding commercialisation opportunities.</p>

<p>The humanoid will weigh 60 kg and will stand 5 feet 6 inches tall. It will be able to carry payloads up to 20 kg.</p>

<p>What makes Figure’s humanoid robots different from its competitors, such as Amazon Robotics and Boston Dynamics is that these humanoid robots can handle general tasks, along with enabling them to learn and interact with the environment. <p>The state government intends to set up a Robo Park either state-owned or in collaboration with industry and academia, where testing facilities would be provided along with co-working spaces and manufacturing options. Moreover, these services would be offered at competitive rates.</p>

<p>A world-class robotics accelerator providing startups with requisite support like incubation, market insights, mentorship, etc., is also on the cards.</p>

<p>Further, the state would set up a separate body called the TRIC, i.e., the Telangana Robotics Innovation Centre, which would serve as the nodal body to spearhead all initiatives related to robotics. The government has also identified 5 pillars for TRIC, namely, infrastructure access, business enablement, research and innovation, human capital enhancement as well as responsible deployment. Together these would help in achieving the vision of the framework.</p>

<h3>Who has developed this framework?</h3>

<p>The above-mentioned framework has been developed by the ITE&amp;C Department of Telangana’s Emerging Technologies Wing, in association with the All India Robotics Association. Moreover, inputs from academia, industry experts, and stakeholders have also been&nbsp;incorporated.</p>

<p>AIIMS, the premier medical institute of the country, has kickstarted its innovative robotics training facility for healthcare professionals from 2 May onwards.</p>

<p>The said facility has been inaugurated at the SET, i.e., skill, e-learning, and telemedicine facility and convergence block, at AIIMS New Delhi and is in collaboration with India Medtronic Private Limited, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medtronic plc.</p>

<h3>The new centre offers best-in-class robotic training to surgeons</h3>

<p>The state-of-the-art surgical robotics training facility aims to provide surgeons with best-in-class training in robotic-assisted surgery and will pave the way toward offering enhanced surgical solutions to patients.</p>

<p>As per the medical institute, “This is in partnership with India Medtronic Private Limited. This centre will provide surgeons with best-in-class training in robotic-assisted surgery which includes simulation as well as wet lab training. It is the first-of-its-kind collaboration for setting up a robotic training facility in any government or public body.”</p>

<p>Further, the said training will help in delivering both clinical education and imparting surgical robotic skills on a not-for-profit basis to residents and senior doctors of AIIMS as well as other teaching institutes with MeHNAT (Medtronic Hugo and AIIMS training) in robotic surgery.</p>

<p>“The aim is to train healthcare professionals on robotic-associated minimally invasive surgeries through technical and procedural training. This will enrich the clinical community and enhance patient outcomes utilising procedural and evidence-based medical education activities,” an AIIMS officer said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Here, it must be mentioned that this centre has been conceptualised and set up under the leadership and vision of Dr M Srinivas, Director, AIIMS-New Delhi. The launch of this robotic-assisted facility has put the medical institute once on the global map as it is the only government-aided medical institution to offer simulation-based robotics training in this part of the world.</p>
