<p>University of Chicago researchers have created a tool called 'Nightshade' that enables artists to 'poison' their digital artwork to prevent its use in training artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This has been done to stop developers from using digital artwork to train their own AI image-creation models.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tool alters images in a way that contaminates AI training datasets with incorrect information. This means the metadata and the code of the original image are altered in such a way, that an AI training model trying to read its data will receive incorrect information thus training its model on false data.</p>

<p>As per MIT's Technology Review report, Nightshade modifies the pixels of a digital image to fool the AI into misinterpreting it. This could potentially harm the AI's ability to produce accurate outputs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For instance, the AI might incorrectly identify a cat as a dog and vice versa. The research team behind Nightshade, led by Professor Ben Zhao, plans to integrate it into their existing artist protection software, Glaze, which is currently available free for web use or download.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vitaly Shmatikov, a professor at Cornell University, suggested that there are currently no known robust defences against these attacks, implying that even robust models like OpenAI's ChatGPT could be vulnerable.<br />

<h3>Meteor Lake: Powering AI in PCs</h3>

<p>One of the major announcements at the event was the launch of Intel’s Intel Core Ultra processors, code-named Meteor Lake. These processors are the first client processors manufactured on the new Intel 4 process node using its 3D high-performance hybrid architecture.</p>

<h3>Rewind.ai: Your AI-Powered Assistant</h3>

<p>Another highlight of the event was the showcase of <a href="https://www.rewind.ai/about">Rewind.ai</a>. This new app is essentially an AI-powered digital assistant, capable of analysing your screen and audio to assist you with finding information, recovering data, transcribing speech, and writing emails.</p>

<p>What sets Rewind.ai apart is its ability to capture and process audio and screen data locally, thus preserving user privacy. This feature is particularly important in today’s world, where data privacy is a major concern.</p>

<p>Intel also confirmed that its ambitious five-nodes-in-four-years process technology plan remains on track. This plan is a testament to Intel’s commitment to continuous innovation and its determination to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.</p>

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have developed a free app called Chatterbaby for Android and iOS devices.</p>

<p>The app utilises an algorithm that can interpret different types of baby cries and relay this information to parents. The creators claim that the app can do this with remarkable accuracy.</p>

<h3>The Inspiration Behind Chatterbaby</h3>

<p>Ariana Anderson, assistant professor and lead researcher at UCLA, was inspired to create the app after noticing similarities in the cries of her three children. As a statistician, she saw patterns in these cries and wanted to test if these patterns were present in other children as well.</p>

<p>To develop Chatterbaby, Anderson and her team uploaded 2,000 audio samples of infant cries. They then used AI algorithms to distinguish between cries induced by pain, hunger, and fussiness. The training involved extracting acoustic features from their database of pre-labeled cries.</p>

<p>Pain cries were taken during vaccinations and ear piercings, while other cries were labelled using parent-nomination and a ‘mom-panel’ consisting of veteran mothers who had at least two children. The algorithm was trained using these acoustic features to predict the most likely reason for the cry.</p>

<p>Within their sample, the algorithm was about 90 percent accurate in identifying pain cries and over 70 percent accurate overall.</p>

<p>However, Anderson emphasises that parents should still rely on their instincts as they are more powerful than any AI algorithm.</p>

<h3>Potential uses &amp; benefits of Chatterbaby</h3>

<p>Chatterbaby could be particularly useful for first-time parents or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It could also be a valuable tool in diagnosing autism at an earlier age. Currently, autism is typically diagnosed around the age of three.</p>

<p>Early detection could allow for earlier intervention. Anderson suggests that unusual vocal patterns in infants could be an early indicator of autism.</p>

<p>While previous studies have shown promising results in detecting abnormal vocal patterns in at-risk children, these studies have small sample sizes. To gather more data, Chatterbaby offers a voluntary study for parents to participate in. Although it’s still in its early stages, it could potentially provide valuable insights for earlier diagnosis in the future.</p>
