Highlights

  • DoorDash uses AI to streamline ordering and enhance customer discovery of food options
  • The company tests an AI chatbot named 'DashAI’ for user prompts
  • San Francisco-based DoorDash dominates US food delivery sales

DoorDash Inc., a prominent US-based food delivery service in competition with Uber, Zomato, and GrubHub, is embracing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the ordering process and improve the way customers discover food options.

Following the trend set by major food delivery companies such as Swiggy, which has established a dedicated team focused on exploring various applications of AI, DoorDash is also leveraging AI to enhance its services. By incorporating AI-generated visuals and information, the company aims to provide customers with a more immersive and informative experience.

However, the company's latest focus is on testing an AI chatbot, designed to respond to specific prompts from users. The company is currently testing an AI-based chatbot named ‘DashAI’ in select markets. The move aims to usher DoorDash into the era of AI-driven customer service, allowing users to receive personalised restaurant recommendations with simple text prompts.

DashAI: The future of personalised food recommendations

Speaking with Bloomberg, Chief Executive Officer of DoorDash, Tony Xu, stated that the meal delivery business is running various experiments internally.

The DashAI system contains a disclaimer stating that the technology is unproven and that accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, its code offers samples of how users may ask the AI system questions:

"Can you show me some great places to eat in the area that are also reasonably priced?"

Where can I get extremely amazing salad alternatives that also deliver burgers?

Where can I find real Asian food?" I enjoy Chinese and Thai food.

These are the predefined prompt examples for users, but customers have the flexibility to input their own prompts as well. Once a prompt is provided, the AI chatbot automatically generates responses, providing customers with quick and personalised answers tailored to their queries.

With DashAI, customers can use natural language queries to find highly rated and affordable dinner options nearby, discover restaurants that offer both burgers and excellent salad choices, or locate authentic Asian food like Chinese and Thai cuisine.

The arrival of AI in the food delivery industry

Major players such as Zomato, Swiggy, and others have made significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence. By adopting an AI chatbot, DoorDash positions itself as a more curated food-ordering service, staying ahead in the highly competitive food-delivery market.

DoorDash's headquarters in San Francisco have secured a substantial share of 65 percent in US food-delivery sales. The introduction of DashAI could further consolidate its position in the industry by providing customers with a seamless and personalised ordering experience.
