IIT Kanpur Develops ‘AI-enabled’ indigenous drone with stealth capabilities

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, has made significant strides in developing an native version of the Kamikaze drone, a type of suicide drone with remarkable capabilities.

These drones, designed under the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) Young Scientist Laboratory (DYSL-CT) project, have the ability to carry warheads of up to 6 kg and cover a distance of 100 km.

Under the guidance of Subramaniam Sadrala, Assistant Professor in the Aerospace Department at IIT Kanpur, the team incorporated advanced technology into the drones, enabling them to evade radar detection. The research and development of these drones have been underway for the past year.

Indigenous Kamikaze drone revolutionises defence technology

In the forthcoming phase, the drones will undergo target destruction trials over the next six months. Measuring two meters in length, the domestically developed Kamikaze drone features a foldable fixed-wing design.

It can be equipped with cameras and infrared sensors for enhanced surveillance capabilities. The launch mechanism for these drones includes options like catapult or canister launchers. With an AI-enabled visual guidance system, the drones can effectively neutralise enemy targets even without Global Positioning Support (GPS) in hostile territories.

These battery-operated Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAV) have a range of up to 100 km and can deliver their payload within 40 minutes, significantly bolstering the offensive capabilities of the armed forces. The IIT Kanpur-developed drone operates autonomously in the air, utilising an algorithm to make decisions.

It can also provide real-time imagery of enemy territory through its high-resolution onboard camera. Featuring all-weather and day-night operational capabilities, the drone employs stealth technology to evade enemy radar detection.

It boasts a maximum ceiling of 4.5 km, ensuring its effectiveness across various scenarios. Assistant Professor Sadrala highlights the importance of funding received from defense corridor,to develop cutting-edge technology which are of great significance to the nation.
