Pioneering 6G: LG electronics achieves milestone in data transmission
LG Electronics' groundbreaking achievements in 6G telecommunications signal a promising future for the evolution of communication technology, unlocking vast possibilities for innovation and connectivity.

Highlights
- LG Electronics demonstrated wireless 6G THz data transmission over a distance of 500 meters
- Standardisation discussions for 6G networks are anticipated to commence around 2025
LG Electronics is making significant strides in the world of 6G telecommunications, achieving a groundbreaking milestone by successfully transmitting and receiving 6G terahertz (THz) data over a distance of 500 meters. This achievement, conducted in collaboration with LG U+, sets a new benchmark for 6G testing in an outdoor, urban environment.
Advancing the future of communication
Building on their previous success in 2022, where LG Electronics demonstrated wireless 6G THz data transmission over 320 meters outdoors in Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany. In fact, LG has been working closely with Fraunhofer to develop essential equipment for 6G transmission and reception. This includes a multi-channel power amplifier and a receiver low-noise amplifier, resulting in performance optimisation and a remarkable output improvement of over 50 percent.
A glimpse into 6G's potential
The recent test at LG Sciencepark not only extended the wireless transmission distance to 500 meters, equivalent to the standard distance for high-powered urban base stations, but also validated the practicality of 6G in various real-world communication scenarios. This includes building-to-building, building-to-ground terminal, and ground-to-ground terminal communications. LG Electronics is now one step closer to realising commercial 6G THz communications.
6G telecommunications represent a significant evolution beyond 5G, promising substantially increased data rates, ultra-low latency, high-reliability data transmission, and the convergence of communications with AI and sensing technologies. LG envisions leveraging these advanced capabilities across various sectors, including autonomous driving, the metaverse, smart homes, smart factories, and more.
Standardisation discussions for 6G networks are anticipated to commence around 2025, with commercialisation slated for 2029. LG Electronics' commitment to research and development, strategic partnerships, and successful technology demonstrations underscore the company's readiness to lead the global transition to 6G.
Since 2019, LG has been actively engaged in 6G research through initiatives such as the LG Electronics-KAIST 6G Research Center and partnerships with leading universities and institutes worldwide, including Fraunhofer Institute, KRISS, and Keysight Technologies. In October, LG will showcase its achievements in 6G technology development at the 'LG 6G Tech Festa,' co-hosted with LG U+.
Dr. Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Electronics, expressed the company's dedication to technological leadership in 6G, stating, "We will continue to cooperate with research institutions and tech companies and conduct our advanced R&D to dominate 6G standard technology."
