As per the latest reports, the US Senators will receive a confidential briefing from the White House on artificial intelligence on Tuesday as lawmakers focus on creating legal protections for the rapidly evolving technology.
The said briefing will be held at 3 p.m. ET( eastern time) in a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) at the U.S. Capitol and is said to be organised by Senate Democratic Leader, Chuck Schumer, along with other senators. Reports have confirmed that it will be the first-ever classified Senate briefing on artificial intelligence.
Comprehensive legislation on AI
The briefing, according to Schumer, will demonstrate how the government of the United States is using and investing in AI to protect national security and learn what their adversaries are doing in AI. He continued to highlight, "Our job as legislators is to listen to the experts and learn as much as we can so that we can translate these ideas into legislative action."
The briefers will include, Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines; Deputy Secretary of Defense, Kathleen Hicks;White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director, Arati Prabhakar and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director, Trey Whitworth.
Last month, Schumer called out for comprehensive legislation to address AI and promised to assemble the top minds in AI to participate in a series of AI Insight Forums that will begin laying down a new foundation for AI policy. The meeting is said to take place in September this year.
Major leaders pose concerns on AI advancements
The concerns posed by the advancements in technology are being addressed by governments all around the world, which led American politicians to call for action to address its risks. A rising number of experts believe that so-called generative AI, which uses data to generate new content like ChatGPT's human-sounding text, has the potential to fundamentally alter human society.
Moreover, in order to prevent potentially catastrophic damage to the country while simultaneously ensuring that the U.S. advances and leads in this transformative technology, Schumer circulated a framework describing a new regulatory system in April.
Additionally, the CEOs of Microsoft (MSFT.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O), and OpenAI, along the company that developed ChatGPT, met with President Joe Biden and other government representatives in April this year to discuss AI.
