Meta reshapes priorities: Dissolves Responsible AI team for enhanced Generative AI development

In a strategic move, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has reportedly disbanded its Responsible AI (RAI) team, redirecting resources towards the development of generative artificial intelligence. The decision signals a shift in priorities within the tech giant. The move comes as Meta aims to consolidate efforts in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

Reshaping priorities

Despite the disbandment of the Responsible AI team, Meta remains committed to responsible AI development, citing a continued emphasis on safety and accountability. The majority of RAI members are expected to transition to Meta's generative AI product team, with others contributing to the company's broader AI infrastructure. The reshaping of the team follows a previous restructuring earlier in the year, characterised by layoffs that left the RAI team significantly diminished.

Challenges & regulatory landscape

The Responsible AI team, established in 2019, had the mandate to identify and rectify issues in AI training approaches. Concerns ranged from ensuring diversity in data used for training models to addressing moderation issues on Meta's platforms. Instances such as a Facebook translation error leading to a false arrest and biased image generation in WhatsApp AI stickers highlighted the importance of responsible AI practices.

The move by Meta aligns with a broader trend in the tech industry, with Microsoft making a similar shift earlier in the year. Governments worldwide are racing to establish regulatory frameworks for AI development. The U.S. government has entered agreements with AI companies, and President Biden has directed agencies to formulate AI safety rules. Meanwhile, the European Union is navigating the complexities of passing its AI Act and has already published its AI principles.
