Chinese tech giant Baidu unveils ChatGPT-like ERNIE Bot, intensifies AI race

The Chinese search engine and AI company, Baidu, on Thursday, unveiled ChatGPT-style AI bot to the general public. It introduced ERNIE Bot, which is the company’s answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT, enabling users to perform AI-driven searches and complete a range of tasks, such as video creation and summarizing complex documents. This move signifies a notable development in the ongoing race to harness AI capabilities for diverse applications.

Interestingly, ERNIE is the first domestic AI bot to be fully available to the people across China. And, it must be noted that this bot is not available outside the country.

Baidu in a statement mentioned, “We are thrilled to share that ERNIE Bot is now fully open to the general public starting 31 August.” It further added, “In addition to ERNIE Bot, Baidu is set to launch a suite of new AI-native apps that allow users to fully experience the four core abilities of generative AI: understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory."

Chinese regulations on AI development

In China, where AI development is a top priority, stringent regulations are being imposed on AI developers. According to these rules, developers are obligated to conduct security assessments and provide detailed information about their algorithms to government authorities if their software is deemed to have an impact on "public opinion." Additionally, AI-generated content must be clearly labeled, emphasizing transparency and accountability in AI applications.

These measures aim to ensure that AI technologies are used responsibly and do not contribute to the spread of false information or manipulation of public sentiment, reflecting China's commitment to maintaining stability and control in the digital sphere.
