The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in India has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at creating a national web browser, fostering innovation and digital accessibility. Named the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, this programme encourages developers across the country to collaborate on building an indigenous web browser.
The key feature of this browser is the integration of an inbuilt Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) India root certificate, ensuring secure online interactions.
Empowering digital signatures with crypto tokens
A notable highlight of the proposed browser is its capability to enable digital document signing through the use of crypto tokens. These tokens, embedded within the browser, would empower Indian citizens to sign documents digitally, enhancing convenience and security. With an emphasis on accessibility and user-friendliness, the browser aims to provide built-in support for individuals with diverse abilities, making digital interactions more inclusive.
A multi-round challenge with impressive prizes
The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge will be conducted in three rounds, fostering a competitive spirit among participants. In the initial round, 18 developers will showcase their talents. Subsequently, the competition will narrow down to eight participants in the second round, and ultimately, the winner will be awarded approximately 34 million rupees ($411,000). This substantial prize underscores the government's commitment to nurturing technological innovation and expertise within the country.

India's government has been actively engaged in regulatory endeavors concerning technology and cryptocurrency. As a member of the G20, it has supported the establishment of a global crypto framework and advocated for inclusivity, particularly in guidelines for crypto development in developing economies. In addition to this, the approval of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 by the lower house of parliament highlights India's ongoing efforts to streamline data compliance regulations for both global tech giants and local companies.
