MGM Grand Hotel has been hit by a cyberattack in Las Vegas, with customers reporting issues with slot machines, online room booking systems, and more.

The casino and hotel giant reported that some systems were down due to a cyber-security issue but added that the rest of its facilities are still up and running.

One customer reported walking into the wrong room due to a malfunctioning digital key, and staff had to give out physical keys.

Customer outcry on social media

People have also taken to social media to complain about cancelled reservations, inability to check-in, card payments, or logging into their MGM accounts.

MGM Resorts said in a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that it had opened an investigation "with the help of leading external cybersecurity experts" and that it had also notified law enforcement.

The company said that it had taken immediate steps to protect its systems and data, such as shutting down some systems.

Ongoing investigation

The MGM resorts and casinos stated that they're still investigating the cyberattack, but they don't know how big it is yet. In a subsequent statement it is said that “Our resorts including dining, entertainment and gaming are still operational.”

The guests are still able to get in and out of their rooms, and their front desk staff is ready to help if needed.

Website messages reflect disruption

The company’s main website is currently offline. On its homepage, a message reads “currently unavailable” and directs visitors to the company’s phone number or a third-party website.

The same message appears on the websites of the firm’s other resorts. It’s the second time the company has acknowledged a cyberattack in as many years.

Data breach in 2019

In a 2019 incident, MGM Resorts experienced a major breach of one of its cloud services, resulting in the theft of over 10 million customer records, including sensitive information such as names, addresses, and passport numbers.

MGM Resorts faces severe operational disruptions following a cyberattack, with customer complaints, reservations canceled, and payment issues. An ongoing investigation seeks to determine the attack's full extent, impacting the company's prominent locations across the US, including Las Vegas.
