Streamlining digital payments experience
The forthcoming feature, scheduled to go live in Bengaluru by the end of this week and nationally by the close of December, promises to streamline the digital payment experience for Ola users. By allowing riders to pay their drivers directly through the Ola app using UPI, the company aims to eliminate the need for third-party applications, enhancing convenience and security.
Effortless transactions with UPI plug-In
Users can effortlessly link their UPI ID and bank accounts directly to the Ola app, simplifying the payment process. After each ride, customers only need to enter their UPI PIN for a safe and secure transaction. This eliminates the hassle of entering card details, and IFSC codes, or maintaining a separate wallet, aligning with Ola's commitment to making payments more user-friendly.
Expanding accessibility for drivers
In a strategic move to enhance accessibility for drivers, Ola also enables customers to pay by scanning the QR code displayed on the driver's app. This groundbreaking initiative is poised to onboard over 2 million Ola drivers as UPI merchants, aligning them with millions of UPI-enabled businesses overnight.
Industry trends: Rise of UPI plug-In
The move by Ola aligns with the rising trend in the industry, where prominent players like Swiggy and Zomato have already integrated UPI Plug-In services for smoother transactions. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in July 2022, the UPI Plugin empowers online merchants to collect payments seamlessly without relying on external payment apps.
This evolution in digital payments is not exclusive to ride-hailing, as payment gateways like PayTm, Razorpay, and JusPay have also launched UPI Plug-In products to expedite UPI payments and reduce potential failures. As the digital payment landscape continues to evolve, Ola's integration of UPI within its app signifies a bold step towards a more streamlined and user-centric future.
