While countries like the USA, Canada, and China have been at the forefront of acquiring and developing efficient technologies, particularly in the fields of AI and robotics, India has also made significant steps in contributing to these advancements. With a growing focus on digital transformation and the government's initiatives to promote technology adoption, India is positioning itself as a significant player in the global tech landscape.

Recently, a 19-year old B.Tech student at NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME) in Mumbai, has created an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of translating sign language into text, revolutionising communication for people with hearing and speech impairments.

In an interview with Web3Cafe.in, Preeyaj Safary talked about how he thought of the idea and what inspired him to create a technology like this.

How does the model work & what’s the technology behind the system?

Being a B.tech student I know the Python Programming Language and this is the only thing that serves as the foundation for the entire system I have developed. Through Python, I have utilised the power of an extensive image database compiled from online sources and conversations with individuals associated with NGOs working in the field of sign language. By effectively leveraging this database, my system achieves precise translation of sign language gestures.

The solution I have created holds potential for enhancing accessibility for individuals who are deaf and mute. This technology has the capability to bring about a significant positive impact, empowering deaf and mute individuals to express themselves more effectively and fostering greater understanding within society.

What inspired you to create a technology like this?

Last year at a restaurant, I noticed something unique. The staff members were deaf and dumb, serving food with incredible dedication. But it made me realise the challenges they face in communicating with the world. That's when an idea sparked in my mind—the idea of creating a model to bridge this communication gap.

My vision for this AI model is to merge technology with the lives of differently-abled individuals, enabling them to live their lives on par with others, without unnecessary struggle, said Preeyaj.

Have you achieved any prior accomplishments, or is this your first notable one?

In addition to my remarkable achievements in sign language translation, I also developed a computer program during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist older individuals in scheduling vaccine appointments. These endeavors showcase my previous accomplishments and contributions in different domains.

What's your further plans for this AI technology?

I am driven by a vision for a future where technology continues to foster positive societal progress, guided by the motto "doing good for society." My aspirations involve exploring emerging technologies and uncovering innovative applications.

Through my passion for technology and dedication to academic excellence, I aim to make a lasting impact. I am committed to leveraging my skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to society and leave a notable imprint in the field.
