In January, the native tokens of the blockchain-based Metaverse projects Decentraland and Sandbox saw huge price increases because of speculations that Apple was planning to enter the mixed reality space. This pattern was highlighted in a tweet on May 15 by independent developer Udi Wertheimer, who suggested that the imminent release might be a factor in the price of Metaverse tokens as a sly dig at influencer-driven meme coins.

During 2021, the Metaverse and the cryptocurrencies connected to it including MANA and SAND increased in popularity as numerous projects claimed to build groundbreaking immersive virtual worlds for users were supported by seemingly endless war chests of venture capital.

Unfortunately, a lot of businesses, including Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, which spent $13.7 billion on R&D in 2022, have not yet experienced widespread consumer adoption. According to information from CoinGecko, at the time of writing, the prices of MANA and SAND are 92% and 94% lower respectively than their record highs at the time of writing, which were both set on November 25, 2021.
