As the two companies work together to create a gaming ecosystem on the Ronin blockchain, players can look forward to more engaging experiences and new opportunities to earn rewards. With this collaboration and a renewed focus on what makes web3 unique, the future of blockchain gaming holds great potential for explosive growth and widespread adoption.
The collaboration also marks a significant move for CyberKongz's popular Play & Kollect game. Currently based on the Polygon blockchain, the game is now migrating to the Ronin blockchain.
The rise of P2E through Axie Infinity
In 2021, Axie Infinity took the gaming world by storm with its pioneering play-to-earn concept. Players were rewarded with crypto tokens for their in-game efforts, making it one of the top projects by sales volume, as recognised by the esteemed NFT data tracker, CryptoSlam.
While the NFT craze took centre stage in 2021, recent times have seen a shift in interest within the blockchain gaming realm. Certain crypto-based games, including Neopets, have embraced a non-crypto approach. This shift highlights the dynamic nature of the industry and its potential for further evolution.
Challenges for the P2E model
Earlier this year, Aleksander Larsen, Co-founder of Sky Mavis, voiced concerns about the current state of the play-to-earn model. He said that the games must prioritise enjoyment and offer a solid economic structure to enable players to earn rewards.
Nevertheless, Kathleen Osgood, the head of business development at Sky Mavis remains optimistic, expressing belief in a game that truly understands the motivations of web3 users, igniting advancement in blockchain gaming.
Osgood stated that many teams have merely replicated web2 successes without achieving explosive growth. Instead, she believes that innovation lies in leveraging web3 as a new experience and tapping into users natural attraction to its unique offerings.
Speaking to Cointelegraph, she said, "The potential to attract a massive audience lies in the innovative approach of leveraging Web3 as a new experience while effectively tapping into users who are inherently drawn to its unique offerings."
The collaboration between Sky Mavis and CyberKongz signals a new era for blockchain gaming on the Ronin platform. While challenges persist, the industry remains hopeful that a game aligned with web3's appeal will serve as the catalyst for explosive growth, unlocking the full potential of blockchain gaming.
