Mojo Story, Bharka Dutt’s news outlet, and Tanmay Bhat, a comedian, both had their YouTube channels unexpectedly deleted on Monday, wiping out all of their years' of hard work.  Reports directed this attack to be linked with a phishing attack targeting high-profile channels on Twitter in recent months.

“After hours of urging @TeamYouTube to act & being assured action is being taken, I woke up to find @themojostory channel content ALL DELETED by the hackers- four years of blood, toil, sweat, tears, 11 thousand videos, COVID work of 3 years, ALL GONE. I am heartbroken,” said on Twitter.

Former Twitter India head urges users to incorporate dApps

On the growing concern of online content, Manish Maheshwari, the former head of Twitter India, says users should give decentralised apps (dApps) a fair chance in order to address the problems and difficulties associated with maintaining accounts and content safely online.
DApps, a component of the Web3 ecosystem, are blockchain-based applications that claim to provide users total ownership and independence over the decisions affecting their content.

"Web3 platforms dramatically alter the threat landscape. Traditional Web3 platforms store data centrally, and thus they attract hackers' attention. Web3 platforms have the potential to be safer, owing to the decentralisation and encryption at their core,” said the 46-year-old Twitter former India head-turned-entrepreneur.

Scenario of hacking would be difficult and different on dApps

Maheshwari who currently heads Web3 app, Fanory, which lets creators monetise their content,  further expressed his take on hacking on dApps. According to him, the hacking scenario would have played out in a different way if a YouTube-like channel had been on a decentralised network.

A decentralised platform eliminates the possibility of a single point of failure, which makes hacking more challenging. To change the content of a channel, a hacker would need to control more than half of the network's nodes, which is practically impossible and prohibitively expensive.

While expressing the role of decentralisation in reducing such attacks, Maheshwari also believed that “its incorporation is not a magic bullet.” Much depends on the specifics of how the platform is designed. To reduce these dangers, a decentralised YouTube would need to implement strict security controls at both the user and blockchain levels, mentioned Maheshwari.
