Leena Rafeeq, an 11-year-old Malayali girl living in Dubai, has created an artificial intelligence-based application that can identify different eye disorders and conditions.

She announced her innovative product called "Ogler EyeScan," which makes use of an iPhone scanning technique, on LinkedIn. It was created when Leena was just 10 years old.

Features of Ogler EyeScan

She posted a video showcasing the Ogler EyeScan's functionality, in which trained models were used to diagnose conditions including Arcus, Melanoma, Pterygium, and Cataract.

Leena stated that the software uses advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms to "analyse characteristics like light and colour intensity, distance, and look-up locations to find the eyeballs within the frame range."

She noted that it shows whether there are any light burst problems and whether the eyes are perfectly positioned inside the scanner frame. Well, the app is presently only working with iPhone 10 and later running iOS 16+.

Leena's concept of her application

Leena shared further information on her invention, revealing that it was developed over the course of 6 months using just SwiftUI natively, without the use of any third-party libraries or packages. The self-taught programmer said that she learned more about "eye conditions, computer vision, algorithms, machine learning models, and advanced levels of Apple iOS programming, including sensor data, AR, CreateML, and CoreML" throughout the development process.

People on social media complimented Leena for her accomplishment at such a young age in the comments section.

One user questioned the product's accuracy. In her response to the user, she said that it is currently nearly 70%.

She did, however, mention the difficulties she had with "glare and bursts from lights caused by the distance required for capturing scans." To address this issue, measurements and detection for light-related issues are being included, allowing consumers to repeat the scan. She also stated that the app is presently being reviewed by Apple and expressed her faith that it will be accepted shortly.

Leena's younger sister, Hana, previously gained attention for breaking the record for the youngest iOS app developer by creating a storytelling app named ‘Hanas’  at the age of 9. The achievement created a lot of internet buzz and even attracted Apple CEO Tim Cook.

What are your thoughts on Leena and her sister’s accomplishment? Isn't that impressive?
