Gaming platform Roblox unveils its AI assistant for virtual worlds at the RDC. Check here for its launch date
Roblox Assistant, unveiled at the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) 2023, aims to make the process of creating experiences within the platform more accessible and user-friendly.

Highlights
- Roblox has introduced an AI assistant named the 'Roblox Assistant'
- The AI assistant will let creators build new virtual experiences
- Roblox also announced AI-based updates, including the ability to create avatars from images and text prompts
Roblox, the popular online gaming platform that lets users create virtual worlds, has introduced a groundbreaking conversational AI assistant known as the ‘Roblox Assistant.’
This innovative tool, unveiled at the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) which was held on 8 September 2023, aims to make the process of creating experiences within the platform more accessible and user-friendly. It builds upon previously introduced features that harness the power of generative AI for asset creation and coding assistance.
How does Roblox Assistant work?
With the Roblox Assistant, creators can simply type prompts to execute actions like generating virtual environments. For instance, typing "I want to create a Metaverse space with robots" prompts Roblox to populate the scene with VR headsets, a virtual environment, and 3D avatars. Further commands given to Robolox will be effortlessly executed, enhancing the immersive experience.
The Roblox Assistant doesn't stop at creating environments; it also has the potential to assist with basic gameplay behaviours. For instance, it could enable actions like teleporting a player when they touch a door.
Additionally, it can provide coding support and answer developers' queries, proving to be a valuable resource for creators on the platform.
Launch date & future prospects
While the Roblox Assistant promises to be a game-changer, creators will have to exercise patience as it is set to launch at the end of this year or early next year.
However, Roblox envisions a broader role for the assistant, with plans to incorporate more sophisticated gameplay features and even the ability to generate 3D models from scratch. This ambitious vision aligns with Roblox CEO David Baszucki's goal of making design as intuitive as seen in Westworld.
AI tools & the creator community
There is a concern that AI tools might replace the work of Roblox's developer and creator communities. In response, Roblox CTO, Daniel Sturman, reassures that generative AI will reduce the reliance on specific technical skills, allowing creators to focus on their unique creative ideas.
Nevertheless, the human touch and craftsmanship of experienced Roblox developers and creators are likely to remain indispensable.
Additional AI updates at RDC
Roblox also unveiled other AI-based updates at RDC, including the ability to create avatars from images and text prompts, set to release in 2024. The company is also exploring ways to use generative AI within existing Roblox experiences, providing users with more creative tools.
Roblox's foray into AI-driven assistance promises to democratise game and world creation, making it more accessible to a broader audience. While AI aids in simplifying the process, the creative genius of developers and creators will continue to shape the unique experiences offered within the Roblox universe.
