Highlights

  • Indian Railways launches 'Gajraj,' an AI-based software to prevent train-elephant collisions
  • The software also discerns the type of movement and the number of animals present
  • 'Gajraj' system to an extent in states such as West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Kerala, Chhattisgarh & Tamil Nadu

In a stride towards wildlife protection, Indian Railways has introduced 'Gajraj,' an innovative AI-based software aimed at preventing tragic collisions between trains and elephants. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed the groundbreaking initiative, emphasising its potential impact on enhancing safety in elephant corridors.

AI guardian for elephant corridors

Minister Vaishnaw stated, "Using AI and optical fibre cable (OFC), the 'Gajraj' software triggers alerts upon detecting any questionable movement within 200 metres of the tracks."

The technology, successfully trialled in Assam, relies on optical fibre cable to sense vibrations caused by elephant movement, distinguishing between these majestic creatures, other animals, and humans.

Swift deployment to tackle urgent needs

With an estimated cost of Rs 181 crore, 'Gajraj' is set to be deployed across 700 km of elephant corridors in multiple states within the next eight months. The urgency arises from Railway Ministry data revealing 45 elephant fatalities due to train accidents in the past three years, including a recent heartbreaking incident in West Bengal.

Proactive alerts for enhanced safety

The software not only detects the presence of animals but also discerns the type of movement and the number of animals present. Alerts generated by the system promptly reach the locomotive pilot, control room personnel, and the section station master, ensuring swift action to prevent collisions.

Expanding the shield across states

The Railway Minister announced plans to extend the AI-powered 'Gajraj' system to states such as West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Kerala, parts of Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu. The move reflects the commitment to wildlife conservation and addresses the pressing issue of train-elephant collisions.

In a concluding note, Minister Vaishnaw dispelled concerns about reduced train operations post-Covid, stating, "Railway services resumed in December 2021 and normalised by July 2022."
