In a move set to revolutionise travel for millions, Google Maps is rolling out a game-changing feature for its Indian users starting in January 2024. Green navigation for greener commutes

The new feature employs AI to analyse real-time traffic data, vehicle types, and road elevation. By doing so, it optimises routes for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, promoting fuel efficiency and sustainability. This aligns with Google's commitment to environmental consciousness and eco-friendly transportation.

Global impact on emissions reduction

The impact of this initiative is not limited to India alone. According to a report by IANS (Indo-Asian News Service), the fuel-efficient routing feature has already prevented over 2.4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions globally from October 2021 to September 2023. This is equivalent to taking around 500,000 fuel-based cars off the road for an entire year, showcasing the potential global impact of the feature.

Digitising public transport experience

Google is taking a step further in enhancing the digital experience of public transport in India. Strategic partnerships with ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) and Namma Yatri (India's first open mobility auto-booking app) will enable the inclusion of metro schedules and bookings directly via Google Maps.

Starting with the Kochi metro, this service is expected to expand to other metros as they join the ONDC network in the middle of the coming year.

Rail travel revolution with enhanced features

In a bid to make rail travel smoother, Google Maps has integrated Kolkata and Mumbai local trains into the 'Where Is My Train' app. This integration allows users to access dynamic information such as train location, platform changes, real-time status, and more, providing an enriched rail travel experience.

Google Maps is not stopping there. The tech giant has introduced several India-first features, like 'Address Descriptors,' a machine learning-driven feature that helps users locate places based on landmarks easily.

Additionally, 'Lens in Maps' and 'Live View Walking Navigation' offer an immersive map navigation experience, building upon Street View.
