Highlights

  • Major players in the outsourcing sector in India are TCS, Infosys, and Wipro
  • Mostaque claimed the jobs of unit testing, bug testing, and brainstorming to be highly replaced by AI

The majority of India's contracted coders would likely lose their jobs over the next year or two as a result of developments in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, according to Stability AI CEO, Emad Mostaque.

On a call with UBS analysts, Mostaque predicted that the majority of the nation's outsourced coders will lose their jobs as a result of AI's ability to produce software with a much smaller workforce.

I think that it affects different types of jobs in different ways. If you’re doing a job in front of a computer, and no one ever sees you, then it’s massively impactful, because these models are like really talented grads.

Extent of impact predicted

As per the recent information from the Stability CEO, he mentioned that not everyone will be impacted in the same way. The majority of impact is dependent on the policies and regulations of different countries, concerning the labour laws. Such an impact, for instance, will be less likely to be felt in nations with stricter labour rules, like France.

According to a Bloomberg study, India is home to nearly 5 million software developers, who are thought to be the group most susceptible to the effects of cutting-edge AI tools like ChatGPT. Major players in the outsourcing sector in the nation include Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro.

Recently, TCS has made significant investments in generative AI and has committed to train over 25,000 engineers in the technology. TCS CEO N. Ganapathy Subramaniam sees an enormous impact on the company’s operations due to AI, stating that the technology will revolutionise the way they conduct projects.

Conventional programmers are likely to be replaced

Within the next five years, Mostaque repeated his earlier prediction that ‘no more programmers’ will exist. However, at the same time, he also makes it clear that he means coders in the conventional sense. He emphasises that although AI will partially automate programming, it will take over duties like unit testing, bug testing, and brainstorming.

Moreover, AI will act as the substitution for traditional programming talents by acting as the 'co-pilots' of programmers.
