Collins corpus
Collins Dictionary's decision is based on meticulous analysis of the Collins Corpus, a colossal database containing over 20 billion words from sources like websites, newspapers, magazines, books, radio, TV, and everyday conversations worldwide. This vast repository helps dictionary editors stay up-to-date with the latest words and their meanings as they emerge.
"We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology.”
Other notable words of 2023
While AI claimed the top spot, Collins Dictionary also highlighted some other intriguing words and phrases from 2023. ‘Nepo baby’ describes the children of celebrities who follow in their famous parents' footsteps. ‘Greedflation’ represents companies making profits during a cost of living crisis.
Additionally, ‘Ulez’ stands for the ultra-low emission zone in London, targeting the most polluting cars. Social media lingo made its presence felt as well, with terms like ‘de influencing’ referring to warning followers to avoid specific commercial products.
Furthermore, ‘Bazball’ entered the lexicon, named after New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum, who promotes a philosophy of relaxed minds, aggressive tactics, and positive energy in cricket.
In contrast to the previous year's Word of the Year, ‘permacrisis,’ which described a prolonged period of instability and insecurity, 2023 has been all about Artificial Intelligence and its ubiquitous influence on our lives.
