Japanese tech giant Sony is set to introduce cloud-streamed gaming on PS5 gaming consoles in Japan, Europe, and North America later in October. This feature will be part of the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, available for a higher price.
The rollout will occur in stages, with the following dates: Japan on 17 October, Europe on 23 October, and North America on 30 October. The company announced this in a PlayStation blog post on Wednesday.
Initially, select PS5 games will be streamable, but Sony plans to expand this to "hundreds" of titles and you don't have to install any of them. The games include PlayStation Plus catalogue entries, digital purchases, and game trials like Hogwarts Legacy and The Witcher 3. Specific titles for the initial launch were not detailed.
Tailored streaming experience
Sony provides flexibility by allowing users to select their preferred streaming resolution, with choices ranging from 4K to 720p. Notably, PS5 game streaming will be limited to PS5 terminals "at launch," hinting at potential future expansion to other devices.
Sony’s cloud gaming endeavours
Sony has been preparing for a cloud gaming expansion, initiating official tests of cloud-streamed PS5 games in June. While cloud streaming appears compatible with the upcoming PlayStation Portal handheld, it currently only supports Wi-Fi streaming from a PS5.
The performance of cloud-streamed PS5 games is highly anticipated, and users are eager to see how well they will perform.
