Goodbye Twitter, Hello 'X': Elon Musk drops the bird logo and introduces 'X' as the new symbol
Twitter is getting a new name, ‘X,’ and a design that looks like Elon Musk's favourite letter.

Highlights
- Musk suggests introducing a new symbol resembling 'X'
- He clarifies 'Xers' won't be referred to and reveals no name
- Elon Musk redesigns Twitter, aiming for an X everything app, similar to WeChat
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, announced on 23 July 2023, his plans to rebrand the platform and eliminate its iconic bird logo. In a tweet, he mentioned that they will bid farewell to the Twitter brand, including the bird logo, and gradually phase out references to birds altogether. Instead, Musk hinted at introducing a new symbol, potentially resembling his personal favourite, the letter ‘X.’
Additionally, Musk said that the word ‘tweet,’ which is typically used to refer to a post on Twitter, will be changed to the word ‘X’ to better reflect the platform's new identity.
What’s the mysterious remark by Elon?
A Twitter account with the handle ‘WOLF’ asked about the new name for a tweet once the site underwent the rebranding during the conversation about the forthcoming modifications. On the same, Musk replied that the new name for a tweet will be, “An X”.
As proof of Musk's fondness for the word ‘X,’ he purchased Twitter last year for an incredible $44 billion and combined it with another company to form ‘X Corp.’ Musk responded to a user by clarifying that users won't be referred to as ‘Xers’ and making a mysterious remark, "We will have no name."
With his most recent decision to redesign Twitter, Elon Musk is moving closer to realising his goal of building the ‘X everything app,’ which would be comparable to China's ‘WeChat.’ This updated platform seeks to provide a variety of services under one platform, including social networking and mobile payments.
After Musk's tweet about the 'X' logo, Twitter users have been having fun and getting creative by incorporating the X logo in various humorous ways. Some are even speculating that the X will have a cool appearance. People are now eagerly waiting to see if Zuck will follow suit and rename Meta to Y. One tweet asked whether you can find the X word hidden in the Meta logo.
Is the 'X’ logo a competitor of Threads?
Musk has been publicly showing his fondness for the letter ‘X,’ making fun references to it in tweets and even posting a photo of himself forming a ‘X’ with his hands. His previous tweets gave some indication of his goals, saying that buying Twitter was an important step towards realising his goals for the everything app called ‘X.’
Musk expressed interest in creating this all-encompassing software back in October of the previous year. And he confirmed his intention to turn Twitter into the envisioned X, the everything app, when Linda Yaccarino was appointed as the new CEO in April 2023.
Elon Musk's decision to rebrand Twitter by changing its logo to an ‘X’ is the most recent in a series of changes he has made since acquiring the company in October 2022. This move comes at a critical point for Twitter as it faces competition from Meta's recently launched app, Threads, which emerged earlier this month. Musk's rebranding strategy seems aimed at positioning Twitter as a strong competitor on the evolving social media platform.
