Using Android Type-C charger for iPhone 15? Apple thinks it’s a bad idea
Apple has advised iPhone 15 users to avoid Android chargers to prevent overheating issues, putting safety first for their devices

Highlights
- Apple warns iPhone 15 users not to use Android USB-C chargers
- Using such chargers may lead to overheating issues
- Apple emphasises using authorised chargers for safety
Apple's recent launch of the iPhone 15 series brought significant changes, notably the adoption of a universal Type-C interface. This move not only meant saying goodbye to proprietary Lightning cables but also aimed to benefit Android users looking to switch to iPhones.
However, a new issue has arisen, affecting iPhone 15 users who use Android phone chargers to power their devices.
Overheating reports surface
Numerous media reports indicate that some iPhone 15 users are encountering overheating problems during charging. Some describe their phones as becoming uncomfortably hot to the touch. Adding to these concerns, reports from China suggest that Apple Stores in the country are advising against using Android USB-C chargers with iPhone 15 devices due to potential overheating risks.
Warnings from Apple stores in China
One Apple store in Foshan, Guangdong Province, reportedly cautioned customers against using Android USB-C cables to charge their iPhone 15. Store staff cited concerns about overheating, attributed to the different pin arrangements of the two interfaces.
They mentioned that using an Android cable could lead to overheating due to the slightly smaller gap between the connectors compared to Apple's USB-C cable.
It's worth noting that this warning hasn't been limited to a single Apple Store. Multiple Apple-exclusive stores across China have reportedly issued similar advisories.
Debate and lack of clarity
While Apple hasn't officially commented on the issue, it has sparked a debate. Some question whether the advisory is genuinely due to device safety concerns or if it's part of Apple's strategy to encourage iPhone 15 users to purchase the company's own USB-C cables.
Users are also highlighting the lack of clear instructions from Apple regarding the use of USB-C charging cables for the new iPhones. While Apple's official guide specifies the use of Apple-branded cables and charging adapters, it also mentions that users can charge their iPhones using third-party cables and power adapters that meet specific criteria.
However, Apple cautions that not all third-party adapters meet these safety standards and can pose risks to user safety, including the risk of death or injury.
The shift to USB-C has brought both convenience and concerns for iPhone 15 users. While some report overheating issues when using Android USB-C chargers, Apple's stance emphasises the importance of adhering to safety standards and using authorised accessories to ensure the safety and reliability of your device.
