Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, made a significant announcement at the 46th annual general meeting (AGM) of the conglomerate, highlighting Reliance Jio's pioneering strides in the development of 6G technology. This revelation has positioned Jio as one of the early global innovators in the race towards the next generation of wireless communication.

Jio & Qualcomm's collaboration on 6GHz technology

During the AGM, Qualcomm CEO, Cristiano Amon, shared insights into the collaboration between his company and Jio in the realm of 6GHz technology. He recounted his meeting with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, where discussions revolved around advancing communication technologies for the socioeconomic development of all Indians. Amon stated, "Jio, with Qualcomm, will enable the right solutions to help achieve this goal. As an ecosystem enabler, Qualcomm actively supports innovative Indian semiconductor and hardware startups. I'm excited to be working together on cloud-native, scalable, and flexible 5G infrastructure, in both mmWave and sub-6GHz, to develop an ecosystem that can extend beyond India."

Prime Minister Modi had previously expressed India's readiness for 6G in his Independence Day speech, underscoring the swift deployment of 5G technology across the nation.

Jio's ambitious 5G rollout plans

Mukesh Ambani also shared Jio's ambitious plans for 5G technology, emphasising that the company is well on track to provide nationwide coverage with ultra-high-speed 5G by December of this year. He proudly declared that Jio's 5G rollout is the fastest of its kind anywhere globally. Furthermore, Ambani highlighted the remarkable growth of Jio's customer base, which now boasts over 450 million subscribers, with a year-on-year revenue increase exceeding 20 percent. The average user on Jio's network now consumes more than 25 gigabytes of data every month, reflecting the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity.

Jio's Role in India's digital transformation

In his address, Mukesh Ambani reminisced about Jio's inception seven years ago, driven by a mission to transform India into a premier digital society. He emphasised the company's unwavering commitment to building a Digital Public Infrastructure, a feat that has garnered global admiration. Jio has undeniably played a pivotal role in India's rapid and impressive digital transformation, becoming a catalyst for the nation's growth on the global technology stage.
