India has experienced a remarkable ascent in global mobile internet speed rankings, catapulting 72 positions in just one year, now securing the 47th position worldwide, according to Speedtest’s Global Index rankings. This places India ahead of several G20 countries, including the UK, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan.

5G's transformative impact

The substantial improvement in India's median download speed, surging by 3.59 times since the inception of 5G, stands out as a testament to the transformative impact of this next-generation technology. In October 2022, the median download speed ranged from 10.37 Mbps in the North East to 21.49 Mbps in Jammu and Kashmir. Fast forward to August 2023, and each region now boasts speeds exceeding 28 Mbps.

Widespread adoption of 5G

This surge in mobile speed can be attributed to the widespread adoption of 5G in India, with major carriers like Jio and Airtel playing pivotal roles in ensuring rapid coverage across major areas and beyond. The efforts of these carriers have significantly contributed to India's enhanced global ranking.

5G download speeds soar

The median 5G download speeds, initially below 100 Mbps in nine telecom circles during the early 5G phase, have witnessed a remarkable surge. By August 2023, these speeds soared to 240 Mbps across all telecom areas, with Kolkata leading the pack at an impressive median download speed of 385.50 Mbps.

Positive impact on customer satisfaction

Beyond speed improvements, the adoption of 5G has positively impacted customer satisfaction, as indicated by the Net Promoter Score (NPS). Users on 5G networks rated their network operators higher than those on 4G LTE, showcasing the positive reception of this advanced technology among consumers.

Addressing 4G congestion

India, known for having some of the most data-intensive consumers globally, faced challenges of network congestion with 4G networks struggling to meet the high demand. However, with the rollout of 5G and strategic spectrum allocation, operators have successfully offloaded 25 percent to 35 percent of traffic from 4G to 5G networks, effectively reducing congestion.

India's rapid climb in global mobile speed rankings signifies a significant stride in its digital connectivity journey, driven by the transformative power of 5G. The positive impact on customer satisfaction and the alleviation of 4G congestion underscore the pivotal role that advanced technologies play in shaping a digitally connected and efficient future for the nation.
