Hyundai & Kia introduce new blockchain-based system to monitor carbon emissions in supply chains
The system uses high-performance blockchain technology to provide safe and precise data collection for carbon emissions.

Highlights
- Hyundai & Kia have launched an AI-enabled blockchain-based system for cooperative carbon emissions control
- The system is called SCEMS
- The initiative will aid in reducing carbon emissions across the entire supply chain and promote eco-friendly practises
In a move towards environmental responsibility, leading Korean automobile manufacturers, Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation, have jointly introduced a new system to monitor carbon emissions in their supply chains. The system, called Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS), utilises cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain to ensure transparency and data integrity.
Additionally, this solution is anticipated to free up suppliers from this time- and money-consuming task and provide them with the tools they need to accurately monitor their carbon emissions. Business partners can effectively monitor the collected data and carbon emission status at their different workplaces using AI and blockchain technology.
How SCEMS works?
SCEMS calculates carbon emissions at every stage of the manufacturing process, starting from the extraction of raw materials to the production and delivery of parts and vehicles. By employing AI and blockchain, the system streamlines data collection and management, making it easier for partners to accurately monitor carbon emissions.
Supporting partner companies
In addition to strongly complying with international environmental requirements, Hyundai and Kia are dedicated to promoting sustainable supply chains. They want to provide their partners and suppliers in the automotive supply chain free distribution of the SCEMS.
With this support, eco-friendly practices will be encouraged and carbon emissions will be reduced across the whole supply chain.
“Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System unlocks a revolutionary approach to managing carbon emissions and combating climate change, ushering in a new era of sustainable supply chain within our cooperative network. We stand proudly at the forefront of this transformative journey, collaborating with our partners to shape a greener and brighter future for all.”
Joining forces with CDP
Earlier this year, Hyundai and Kia joined the Carbon Disclosure Project's (CDP) programme. Through this programme, the companies provide training on carbon neutrality to their partner companies. The CDP is a non-profit organisation that encourages companies to disclose their climate impact and works to broaden the scope of environmental disclosure.
The world's largest automakers are setting the standard for encouraging environmentally friendly practices throughout their supply chains by utilising AI and blockchain technologies. The initiative of both companies to utilise SCEMS demonstrates their dedication to preventing climate change and building a more sustainable future.
