Since I/O 2023, the California-based tech conglomerate has been pushing a bunch of in-development AI tools such as Google Bard chatbot and ‘Help me Write’ feature, its latest AI-powered writing assistant.

Previously, the Help me Write feature was only available for enrolled Workspace testers on desktop, but now it is available in the Gmail app for beta testers on iOS & Android, pointing towards a wider rollout.

How does it work?

Help Me Write offers two primary functions. Firstly, it can enhance your already composed email by making it more concise, formal, or casual with the addition of emojis using the 'I'm feeling lucky' option.

Secondly, if you're in a hurry, you can provide a quick prompt, and the tool will generate a complete draft for you. You can then fine-tune the content according to your style or utilise the tool's refinements to adjust the length and tone. Tests have indicated that the AI excels more as an editor rather than a writer.

However, when it comes to drafting multiple replies to boring emails, allowing AI to handle the majority of the work can save significant time.

How to get Help me Write?

To access Help Me Write and other AI tools, you must sign up for the invite-only Google Workspace Labs and receive an approval. Simply log into your Google account, visit the official Workspace Labs sign-up page, and complete the necessary consumer acknowledgments.

It's important to note that these tools are still in the beta testing phase, so expect some bugs. We recommend reviewing AI-written emails before sending them to catch any major errors. Additionally, be aware that the AI currently uses US English, so if you're in a region with different spelling or terminology, you may need to make some corrections.
