Highlights

  • X allows voice and video calls within DMs without the need to share phone numbers
  • Measures in place to counter spam calls as X prepares for feature launch
  • Twitter rebranded as X, offering extended content options and revenue-sharing

Twitter's transition into X sees CEO Linda Yaccarino confirming upcoming audio and video calls sans phone number sharing. Users will soon access these features within the Direct Message (DM) menu, as announced during Linda's discussion with CNBC.

Moreover, an X design engineer, Andrea Conway shared an image displaying the DM menu's new look, featuring options for voice and video calls. Positioned in the upper right corner, the video calling feature's appearance resembles common platforms.

A cue from competitors?

Unlike some competitors, X will let users initiate voice and video calls without divulging phone numbers, a step intended to enhance privacy. Additionally, measures will be in place to counteract spam calls. Final trials are underway for X's native video and voice calling feature, slated to launch in the coming weeks.

As usual, new X features will likely come with certain limitations for non-premium users. Under Elon Musk's ownership, Twitter underwent extensive changes, including its transformation into X.

X's big plans for the future

The shift encompassed the introduction of elements like articles and extended videos, alongside the option for users to monetize their content, with X offering up to 97% of generated revenue. Similarly, X imposed several restrictions on unpaid users, including caps on daily tweets and DMs, aimed at curbing data scraping and safeguarding against system manipulation.

The recent branding overhaul of X to Twitter has received mixed reactions from the platform's users. While many look at this change as a new-age dynamic move into the future, many have criticized the move as being a bit overambitious and unnecessary. Despite the backlash, X has been proactively pushing for new features to be added to the platform and that could compel the critics to have a change of heart.
