In March 2006, the ‘Blue Bird’ logo, was designed by Simon Oxley, a British graphic designer, created the original Larry, the blue bird logo, affectionately named after basketball legend Larry Bird. The logo was also referred to as ‘Larry the Bird’.
The logo is said to embody Twitter's mission of facilitating swift global communication.which now bears little resemblance to the present icon. Twitter purchased it from iStock in 2006 for about $15. However, as iStock images couldn't be used as official logos, Twitter developed its in-house bird logo in 2009, further refining it into the current streamlined design.
The Idea behind the bird
The concept behind the bird logo was rooted in the idea of simplicity, freedom, and the ability to connect with others effortlessly. Much like a bird soaring through the sky, Twitter aimed to give users the power to convey their thoughts, opinions, and ideas in 280 characters or less.
Design changes to the logo
Simon Oxley designed the original "Blue Bird" logo for Twitter in March 2006. Over time, the logo underwent refinements, including a darker shade of blue in 2009, a simpler design without the feather in 2012, and an upward-facing posture in 2016.
Twitter continued to fine-tune the logo in 2020. Through these changes, the logo has remained a potent symbol of global connectivity.
