Users in India may now detect deepfake images, videos and political or election ads on Facebook & Instagram
Meta's new policy is a welcome step in the fight against deepfakes and making social media a more trustworthy place.

Highlights
- Meta to require advertisers to disclose deepfakes in social issues, elections, and politics ads
- The disclosure will appear on the ad itself and will be required to be in a ‘clear and conspicuous’ manner
- The policy goes into effect in January 2024 and will be applicable to advertisers across the world
Meta is taking steps to address the growing threat of deepfakes by requiring advertisers on Instagram and Facebook to disclose whenever an ad related to social issues, elections, or politics includes a convincingly realistic image or video, or authentic-sounding audio that has been digitally generated or modified.
The new policy, which goes into effect in January 2024, is designed to help users make informed decisions about the content they consume online. Deepfakes can be used to spread misinformation and disinformation, and Meta wants to make it clear to users when they are seeing content that has been manipulated using AI.
The disclosure will appear on the ad itself, and advertisers will be required to use a ‘clear and conspicuous’ manner. This means that the disclosure should be easy for users to see and understand. Advertisers will not be required to disclose minor alterations, such as changes in size, image cropping, color correction, image sharpening, or any other ‘inconsequential’ change.
Meta's new policy is a welcome step in the fight against deepfakes. By requiring advertisers to disclose when they are using this technology, Meta is making it more difficult for people to be misled by fake content.
In addition to this new policy, Meta also has existing policies in place for all users regarding deepfake videos on Instagram and Facebook. These policies prohibit users from posting content that claims that someone said something they didn't, or presents misinformation as a fact or truth.
The spread of deepfakes is a serious concern, but Meta's new policy is a step in the right direction. By requiring advertisers to disclose when they are using deepfakes, Meta is helping to make social media a more trustworthy place.
