The 7th Edition of the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 kicked off in a grand style with Prime Minister Modi's inauguration. Over 7000 attendees gathered at Bharat Mandapam, setting the stage for a remarkable event jointly organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

This year's theme, 'Global Digital Innovation,' set the tone for a day filled with showcases of innovative technologies and ideas spanning various sectors. Delegates and exhibitors unveiled cutting-edge solutions tailored to India's unique needs and global demands.

Empowering India with 5G

The '100 5G labs initiative' stands as a bold endeavour to harness the potential of 5G technology, addressing India's specific requirements while catering to global demands. This initiative fosters innovation across sectors like education, agriculture, health, power, and transportation, propelling India to the forefront of 5G technology adoption. Additionally, it paves the way for a 6G-ready ecosystem, crucial for national security.

From 5G rollout to 6G leadership

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India's remarkable progress in the 5G arena. Within one year of the 5G rollout, India boasts over 4 lahks 5G base stations, covering more than 97 percent of cities and 80 percent of the population. Median mobile broadband speeds tripled, and India moved from the 118th to the 43rd position globally. India's ambition continues beyond 5G; it aspires to lead in 6G technology.

The first day they have featured informative sessions led by industry leaders from India and around the world, including Ericsson, Intel, Reliance, ISRO, Qualcomm, and more. Leaders from prominent companies, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Enterprises, and Aditya Birla Group, praised Prime Minister Modi's visionary leadership. They applauded India's transformation into a digital powerhouse, thanks to initiatives like Digital India and Make in India.

Lt. Gen. M U Nair emphasised the importance of cybersecurity as India's digital landscape expands. With services going online, cybersecurity becomes vital for both citizens and national security.

Ludvig Landgren from Ericsson lauded India's impressive progress in 5G deployment. India achieved 100 million 5G subscribers in just one year, outpacing other markets in user engagement with 5G applications.

India is poised to become a global manpower supplier, particularly in industries like semiconductor manufacturing. The workforce's passion and determination set India apart on the global stage.

Looking ahead to 6G

Lt. Gen. Dr. S.P. Kochhar outlined the transition to 6G technology. India is prepared on the rollout and technology fronts, but the focus must shift to creating applications to lead in 6G.
