Google Pixel 8 Pro receives an AI Core update for enhanced on-device features; here’s how it will function

The much-anticipated AI Core application is now making its way to Pixel 8 Pro smartphones through a series of updates available on the Google Play Store.

Fueling on-device features

Google's Pixel devices, since the Android 14 update, have been gearing up for an AI boost with the introduction of AI Core. Unlike a standalone app, AI Core quietly operates in the background, similar to Android System Intelligence or Private Compute Services, enhancing the device's capabilities without direct user interaction.

AI core's role

According to the Google Play Store description, AI Core is set to empower various features across the Android system while equipping apps with the latest AI models. Its role extends to managing updates for AI models that power on-device AI-driven features, providing users with a seamless and advanced experience.

Delving into the application's settings, users can fine-tune their experience with a toggle named 'Enable AI Core Persistent.' This option, disabled by default, allows AI Core to persistently run, optimising memory usage on the device. Users can access this option not only through the application but also within the developer options.

Pixel 8 Pro takes the lead

Recent reports indicate that Google has initiated the rollout of the first AI Core update for Pixel 8 Pro users. However, there's no official word yet on when the update will reach the Pixel 8 or other Pixel devices.

In another noteworthy update, Google's AI chatbot Bard is evolving. The tech giant has added the ability for Bard to understand and analyse YouTube content, allowing users to engage in richer conversations with the chatbot about videos.
