Apple is gearing up to revamp its AirPods lineup, aiming to create clearer distinctions between its offerings and address consumer preferences. In a report by Mark Gurman, a tech reporter known for his accurate reporting on Apple's product plans, it is suggested that Apple plans to phase out the second-gen and third-gen AirPods when a successor is unveiled in the fall of 2024.

Gurman indicates that the third-gen AirPods didn't perform as per expectations, due to consumers opting for the cheaper, and older second-gen model that Apple still sells. To avoid this situation, Apple plans to simultaneously release two sets of fourth-generation AirPods in 2024.

Both models will be positioned below the AirPods Pro in terms of pricing, but they'll have more noticeable differences. The new fourth-gen AirPods will feature a design that blends elements from the third-gen AirPods and the Pro model, with shorter stems.

Distinguishing features of the fourth-generation AirPods

The higher-end version of these fourth-gen AirPods is expected to borrow some features from the AirPods Pro, such as noise cancellation and integrated speakers on the charging case for enhanced Find My support. Interestingly, neither variant is likely to include replaceable silicone ear tips.

They may retain the traditional one-size-fits-most, open-air design, giving the AirPods Pro an edge in noise cancellation and sound quality. These new AirPods will also continue Apple's shift towards USB-C, offering users a more versatile and modern connection standard.

While the report does not delve into specifics, it hints at an upcoming redesign of the AirPods Pro in 2025. This means Apple is poised to introduce flagship earbuds with a fresh look and potentially new features.

Slight updates for AirPods Max

In addition to the AirPods, there's a mention of a minor refresh for the AirPods Max in the near future. This update will bring a USB-C port and new colour options, aligning them with modern connectivity standards.

While the changes might be subtle, it's possible they will support lossless audio when paired with devices like the Vision Pro. Apple's commitment to innovation and meeting consumer demands is evident in these upcoming AirPods updates.

With a clearer product hierarchy and various improvements, Apple aims to offer a compelling audio experience for users in the coming years.
