OpenAI’s top official Twitter account hacked, lures investors for a crypto scam

As per reports, the Twitter account of Open AI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, was apparently hacked for promoting a 'scam' cryptocurrency airdrop. The scam tweet was live for almost an hour, though was taken down later.

In fact, the CTO’s account tweeted what appeared to be a phishing link promising an airdrop of a purported ERC-20 token.

Murati’s Twitter account posted a supposed phishing link of a scam aping ChatGPT, the popular OpenAI product. Also, the said tweet assured the airdrop of OPENAI, a purported ERC-20 token OPENAI. Interestingly, the website mentioned in the link has reportedly directly copied the design and layout of the actual project called ChainGPT but with slight variations.

It must be noted that a verified Twitter user, Mira Murati has about 126,200 followers on the social media site. Before pulling it down, the misleading post was retweeted 83 times and was viewed 79,600 times. In spite of this, there is no confirmation of any victims of the scam.

In fact, few Twitter users are of the opinion that Murati was fallen prey to a SIM-swapping attack.

Hackers, nowadays, have become tech-savvy

The scammers involved in this fraudulent act appeared to be tech-savvy and sophisticated so as to restrict the comments on the said post, thus stopping others from easily warning the link as a scam.

In fact, a researcher from Beosin, a blockchain security firm, highlighted that the site uses a crypto wallet draining kit that “lures visitors into signing requests.” Upon signing the request, the scammer will transfer ERC-20 tokens and NFTs out of the victim’s wallet.
