Twitter may soon restrict number of DMs for non Blue Twitter subscribers

Twitter is working on yet another feature that is said to restrict access to some features that are currently available for free of cost.

Highlights

  • Not officially announced by Twitter, but company CEO, Elon Musk hinted on such an update in Twitter
  • The microblogging platform would reduce the existing cap of 500 DMs to 30 DMs

On 1 April 2023, Twitter announced a subscription for blue tick feature and later on limiting features for users who don't pay for the services. Now, Elon Musk is yet to introduce another feature that is said to restrict the number of direct messages or DMs sent by a user without Blue tick.

In wake of several other restrictions imposed by Twitter, after Elon Musk acquired the platform in October 2022, Twitter announced a limit on direct messages (DMs) and restricted the ability to send direct messages to non-followers, making it exclusive to Twitter Blue accounts.

Elon Musk on Monday said that “Twitter will ‘hopefully’ roll out a new update this week, which will limit the ability to send DMs to people who don't follow you to Blue users.”

Services restricted for non-Twitter Blue subscribers

According to reports, this microblogging platform would reduce the existing cap of 500 DMs each day for free users to a maximum of 30 DMs. With this move, it appears that Twitter is planning to push more users to sign up for its Twitter Blue subscriptions, a premium service by the platform that offers more reach, monetisation features and more.

At this time, it's important to note that Twitter Blue subscribers already have access to features like undo tweets, pinning them on the top of their profiles, creating longer tweet posts, and acquiring access to some exclusive content, among others.

Well, the information about limiting the DMs has not officially been announced by the social media firm, but as per the tweet posted by Elon Musk, it's confirmed that the company is working on such a feature, which could be rolled out soon.

Reaction of Twitter users

Reacting to the torrent of DMs from spam accounts, a Twitter user posted, "My DMs have just become bot central. Never been this bad. "
To this, @TitterDaily-an account focused on providing Twitter news-- commented, "Your DM spam should be going down considerably in the coming weeks."

"Hopefully releasing the update this week. As I've said many times, it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between AI bots. Soon, it will be impossible," Musk replied.
