Highlights
- AI analyses music libraries, blends algorithms with expert genre editors for regulation
- The voice model enables interactive user commands, led by Xavier Jernigan
- Spotify enhances music discovery with global AI DJ expansion
Spotify has integrated an impressively realistic artificial DJ into its platform, generating music selections according to users' musical tastes and listening patterns. Spotify aims to leverage its underlying technology for more substantial applications after getting the positive reception of this AI DJ tool.
Spotify employs cutting-edge AI techniques, including large language models and generative voice technology, complementing its investments in personalisation and Machine Learning (ML). The company believes these advancements shouldn't be restricted to a single feature, prompting them to explore alternative applications for the technology.
Spotify AI-driven DJ features
Spotify recently unveiled plans to extend its AI-driven DJ feature's availability to more countries worldwide. Launched in February, this tool employs artificial intelligence to sift through users' music libraries and identify tunes of potential interest. Despite its AI foundation, the process remains partially human-guided, with Spotify combining AI algorithms and expert human editors specialising in various music genres.
The DJ feature also includes a voice model, enabling users to interact with it using voice commands. It's designed to engage in conversations, providing answers to queries.
Spotify's choice for the AI voice was Xavier "X" Jernigan, the company's head of cultural relationships and host of "The Get Up" podcast. By incorporating commentary alongside personalised music suggestions, Spotify aims to encourage listeners to explore new songs and genres they might otherwise overlook.
Global expansion & users engagement
Initially, the features were limited in the US and Canada but the service expanded to the UK and Ireland in May. Now, premium users across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand will get access to the feature. However, the feature's language capabilities are currently confined to English.
Since its introduction, the DJ feature has gained significant traction. Users have spent nearly a third of their listening time engaging with it, indicating its popularity and impact on music consumption habits. With its unique blend of AI-regulated recommendations and human-guided regulation, Spotify's DJ feature continues to enhance the music streaming experience for a growing global audience.
