Highlights

  • Project Starline was announced at Google I/O 2021
  • It makes use of advanced AI to build a photorealistic model of the person one is talking to

Technological advancements have had a revolutionary impact on communication, including the growth of near-instant communication by electronic mail, instant messaging, VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) telephone calls, two-way interactive video calls, etc. In fact, technology has completely changed how we communicate. From our daily personal lives to the workplace, communications have become faster, more efficient, and more convenient.

As per reports, Project Starline, which was announced at Google I/O 2021, is currently hogging the limelight.

What is Project Starline?

Project Starline is a technology project combining advances in hardware and software, thereby creating a remote communication experience that makes the user feel being together even while being thousands of miles apart.

This technology makes use of advanced AI to build a photorealistic model of the person one is talking to. Next, it displays the same onto a light field display with a unique sense of volume and depth, thus resulting in a lifelike image of the other person as if they were right in front of you.

In fact, this perception of co-presence is designed by representing users in 3D at a natural scale, enabling eye contact, and providing spatially accurate audio.

It must be noted that Project Starline is currently available in a few places and requires custom-built hardware and highly specialised equipment. The company aims to make this person-to-person communication technology more affordable and accessible.

Earlier prototypes seemed complex

As per reports, the previous Project Starline prototypes took up an entire room, requiring complex hardware such as infrared light emitters and specialised cameras for creating a live 3D model of the person you were talking to.

However, Google has commenced testing the latest prototype with a number of high-profile partners, including T-Mobile, Salesforce, and WeWork. Meanwhile, neither price nor timeline has been revealed for the new system.

Project Starline's value to users

When compared to traditional video conferencing, findings suggest that Project Starline results in improved conversation dynamics, reduced video meeting fatigue, and increased attentiveness. In fact, users opined that this technology has been a significant improvement over traditional video conferencing when talking about actual work meetings or in highly controlled lab experiments.
