In a momentous stride towards technological advancement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi incorporated a real-time artificial intelligence-based translation tool, 'Bhashini,' during his speech at Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi on 17 December 2023. The tool aims to bridge linguistic gaps, offering a unique way for people to connect.

AI takes centre stage in Varanasi

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd at Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Prime Minister Modi extended a warm welcome, referring to the participants as his family. Embracing the use of cutting-edge technology, he introduced the groundbreaking 'Bhashini,' an artificial intelligence-driven language translation system.

"Today, the use of new technology has taken place here through Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a new beginning and hopefully, it makes it easier for me to reach you."

What is Bhashini?

'Bhashini' is more than just a translation tool; it's an AI-based language translation system accessible via dedicated Android and iOS apps. The user-friendly platform allows individuals to converse in their native language, even with those who don't understand the said language.

Additionally, the app features a 'Bhasadaan' section, encouraging users to contribute to various crowdsourcing initiatives.

Bhashini: Breaking language barriers

'Bhashini' stands as a testament to technological innovation, offering real-time translation for those in the audience who understood Tamil. It empowers individuals to converse in their native language while engaging with speakers of other Indian languages.

"Going to Varanasi from Tamil Nadu means going from Mahadev's home to another. That's why the bond between people of Tamil Nadu and Varanasi is special," highlighted PM Modi, underlining the unique cultural connection fostered by the tool.

Union Finance Minister commends the tech leap

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded the integration of 'Bhashini' into PM Modi's speech, deeming it an "exciting step" forward.

In a social media post, she shared, "#Bhashini is a digital product of the National Language Translation Mission. Bhashini and Artificial Intelligence (AI) working together, translated PM Narendra Modi’s speech into Tamil in real-time."

In his address at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam inauguration, he emphasised the special bond between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, solidifying the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.'

"Tamil Nadu and Kashi share a special bond. You all have come here as members of my family, more than just guests. I welcome you all to the Kashi Tamil Sangamam,that is why the love and bond that exists in the heart between the people of Tamil Nadu and the people of Kashi is different and unique,: remarked the Prime Minister.
