OpenAI has once again grabbed attention by filing trademarks for GPT-6 and GPT-7 in China, showcasing its commitment to advancing generative AI on a global scale.

Highlights
- OpenAI has recently applied for trademarks for "GPT-6" and "GPT-7" in China
- The filings are currently under review by the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration
San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) juggernaut, OpenAI, renowned for its groundbreaking ChatGPT application, is making significant moves in the realm of AI technology. The company has recently applied for trademarks for "GPT-6" and "GPT-7" in China, a testament to its commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI innovation.
Trademark applications under review in China
OpenAI has submitted two Chinese trademark applications for GPT-6 and GPT-7, falling under class 9 for apparatus and instruments used in scientific or research purposes, and class 42, which covers technological services and design.
The filings are currently under review by the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The applications were made by OpenAI OpCo, the major entity of the Microsoft-backed startup based in San Francisco, California.
Continued advancements beyond ChatGPT
Since the launch of ChatGPT a year ago, OpenAI has been consistently enhancing the capabilities of its large language models (LLMs). ChatGPT initially relied on GPT-3.5, boasting 175 billion parameters. In March, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, a more advanced version with undisclosed parameters, estimated by sources to exceed 1 trillion. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, revealed in an interview with the Financial Times last month that the company is actively working on GPT-5 and intends to secure additional funding from Microsoft to bolster its research and development efforts.
Strategic trademark moves in China
Despite none of OpenAI's services being officially available in China, including Hong Kong, the company has strategically filed for trademarks, including "GPT-4" and "Whisper" earlier this year, emphasising its forward-looking approach in the global AI landscape. The recent applications for GPT-6 and GPT-7 suggest OpenAI's commitment to expanding its presence and influence in the rapidly evolving Chinese AI market.
OpenAI OpCo has not responded to inquiries regarding the trademark applications. The company's proactive steps to secure trademarks align with its mission to stay at the forefront of AI development, fostering a future where sophisticated language models play a pivotal role in various technological domains.
