Innovative exam surveillance: AI cameras to keep watch on class 10 students during board examinations

In a bid to ensure fair play and curb cheating in the upcoming class 10 board exams in Odisha, state education authorities are embracing cutting-edge technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered surveillance cameras are set to be strategically placed to closely monitor exam centres and safeguard the integrity of the examination process.
To maintain transparency and security, Odisha's Board of Secondary Education (BSE) plans to use AI-powered cameras during the class 10 board exams scheduled from 20 February to 4 March next year. These state-of-the-art cameras will be strategically positioned not only in examination halls but also in strong rooms storing exam papers, offering real-time surveillance.

Live-streamed footage from these AI cameras will be closely monitored at the BSE headquarters in Odisha, providing vigilant oversight throughout the examination period.
Ramashis Hazra, President of BSE, emphasised that the AI technology aims to promptly identify any irregularities or discrepancies during the exams. "Any discrepancies will be immediately brought to our attention," stated Hazra.
Massive participation & exam schedule
A staggering 5,51,611 students have registered for the class 10 exams, set to take place across 2,991 centres in the state. The exam schedule includes subjects like the first language Odia, second language English, Mathematics, and others. The BSE has also disclosed plans for class 9 examinations, scheduled from 6-15 March , with specific details to be announced.
Innovative steps for exam preparation
In addition to the AI-powered surveillance for class 10 exams, the BSE is introducing innovative measures for class 9 exams. This year, class 9 exam question papers will be accessible via a web portal, allowing schools to download them using designated credentials two hours prior to the test. Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, BSE Vice-President, highlighted this move as part of the board's commitment to modernising examination processes.
