India unveils ambitious plans for AI & robotics: A roadmap to a $1 trillion digital economy

In a key step in increasing India's digital capability, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has unveiled a comprehensive report on the India AI Programme. This eagerly awaited document, developed through extensive deliberations by six working groups over four months, charts an ambitious course for the country's artificial intelligence (AI), AI chips, and robotics sectors.

AI as a key driver for India's digital economy

The report's fundamental thesis is to present artificial intelligence as a driving factor in India's fast-rising digital economy and to reach an astounding $1 trillion valuation. This implies a heavy emphasis on creating use cases that might stimulate AI applications across diverse industries, moving India forward in the digital sphere.

The study also emphasises the value of data and plans to establish an India Data Sets Platform. With the use of this platform, various anonymised data sets will be gathered and trained into multi-parameter models. It is anticipated that this data-driven strategy will promote innovation and improve the capabilities of AI applications.

India's AI compute platform: A joint effort

To provide the necessary computational power for AI applications and research, MeitY has proposed the establishment of the 'India AI Compute platform.' This public-private partnership (PPP) project aims to expand GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) capacity. By joining forces, this initiative intends to create an environment conducive to innovation and development in the AI sector.

The paper also outlines a development plan for India's AI chips, highlighting the necessity of homegrown chip production to support the expansion of the AI and robotics sectors. With this endeavour, India hopes to become more technologically independent and competitive on a global level.

National robotics policy

Alongside the AI report, MeitY has also released a consultation paper on the National Robotics Policy. This crucial policy, currently under review, is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape for automation, autonomous systems, and the robotics industry in India.
