Google I/O 2023: Here are the top AI features announced at the event

On Wednesday, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, introduced a host of new features at the annual Google I/O 2023 event, the company's biggest event of the year. The event was held in front of a limited live audience at California’s Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.

 

The tech giant put forth a rapid-fire stream of announcements during its developer conference. Some of the major unveilings are enumerated below.

PaLM 2

Pichai unveiled PaLM 2, which is the newest version of Google’s large language model (LLM). This version is a state-of-the-art language model with improved multilingual, reasoning, and coding capabilities and supports about 100 languages, and also allows collaboration.

Magic Editor

Secondly, Google Photos will soon have a Magic Editor that will make use of semantic engineering and generative AI to enhance images. This development is expected later this year.

Google Maps

Thirdly, a new Immersive View for Maps routes was also unveiled in the Google I/O event, giving detailed information that a user may need into one place, like traffic simulations, bike lanes, complex intersections, parking, etc. In order to get a photorealistic view of the route, users can click on Immersive View. Moreover, Real-time weather updates and air quality index are also on the cards.

'Help me write’ tool

Further, a 'Help me write' tool will soon be used by Gmail, which would help the users in composing replies by drawing relevant information from the message. Also, options like 'Elaborate' or 'Recreate' can be selected, which would help make the content more compelling.

Improved Bard

At the Google I/O event, it was revealed that Google Bard can now perform both coding and debugging in over 20 programming languages. Moreover, the tech giant has removed the waitlist for this tool and is opening up access to more than 180 countries and regions in English. Moreover, the tech company is partnering with Adobe for some art generation capabilities via Bard.

Google Search

An AI update is also in the pipeline for Google Search, which would display better-integrated search results along with enhanced safety systems and a diverse range of content.

MusicLM

A new tool, ‘MusicLM’ was also introduced, which is an experimental AI tool that turns text descriptions into music. It is available in the AI Test Kitchen app on the web, Android or iOS.
