In the initial phase, the enumeration of trees will be manual, followed by the second phase, where AI technology will be used for the location and tagging of trees.

AI-powered tree census launches for sustainable urban growth

Highlights

  • MCD has initiated an AI-based tree census to enhance green cover in the city
  • The initiative will enable easy identification of trees
  • It marks the first instance of employing AI technology for tagging trees

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated an AI-based tree census to enhance green cover in the city. Mayor Shelly Oberoi, representing the Aam Aadmi Party government, highlighted the endeavour as a step in sync with the Kejriwal government's commitment to promoting green initiatives.

Tree census process

Mayor Oberoi shared, "On the lines of the Kejriwal government, MCD’s Aam Aadmi Party government is promoting greenery; for the first time, a 'Tree Census' is being conducted in the wards." The census, expected to conclude in the next 15 days, will be a two-phase process.

In the initial phase, the enumeration of trees will be manual, followed by the second phase, where AI technology will be used for the location and tagging of trees. This marks the first instance of employing AI technology for tagging trees.

Purpose & benefits

The primary goal of this initiative is to ascertain the actual number of trees in the city. Mayor Oberoi emphasised, "This initiative will enable easy identification of trees and will also help in their pruning. Also, counting trees will help in controlling illegal tree cutting and ensuring greenery in the city."

Once the census is completed, the accurate count of trees in all wards will enable targeted tree plantation drives in areas lacking green cover.

Green Delhi Action Plan

Under the Green Delhi Action Plan 2023–24, the Horticulture Department has already planted around 84,143 trees and 2,36,092 bushy plants as of November. Additionally, the recent budget proposes the development of five forests using Miyanwaki technology (i.e., to create dense forests with native plants.), building on the success of eight mini forests created last year.

Commitment to environmental conservation

Mayor Oberoi affirmed, "The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is making every possible effort to increase the green cover in Delhi." The tree census, with its blend of manual counting and AI technology, stands as a testament to the city's dedication to a greener and more sustainable future.
