Govt responds to the deepfake issue
In response to the rising concerns over deepfake content, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) is set to create a platform where individuals can report violations of IT rules on social media platforms.
"Meity will establish a user-friendly platform for people to easily report rule violations to the ministry. Additionally, the ministry will develop a mechanism to assist individuals in filing FIRs."
It is noteworthy that Section 7 of the IT rules addresses the possibility of revoking the intermediary status of social media platforms and pursuing legal action against them under the Indian Penal Code if they fail to comply with the specified rules.
