  • Sam Altman says ChatGPT is a ‘channel’
  • Altman hinted at the impending launch of GPT-5, OpenAI's next-generation AI model

In a recent exclusive interview with the Financial Times, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled a grand vision for the future, describing the company's flagship creations, ChatGPT and DALL-E, as mere ‘channels’ into a singular entity he envisions as 'magic intelligence in the sky.’ Altman emphasised that these are not individual products but gateways to a broader intelligence platform.

OpenAI's singular product

Altman clarified during the interview, stating, "Those (ChatGPT, DALL-E) aren’t really our products…Those are channels into our one single product, which is intelligence, magic intelligence in the sky. I think that’s what we’re about."

This suggests a unified AI ecosystem that transcends specific applications, reflecting OpenAI's commitment to a more encompassing vision.

GPT-5 on the way

Excitingly, Altman hinted at the imminent arrival of GPT-5, OpenAI's next-generation AI model. While unveiling GPT-4 Turbo at the recent developer day, Altman refrained from providing a concrete timeline for GPT-5's release. He explained that the model's training data would be a blend of publicly available datasets and proprietary information from companies.

Altman, teasing the unknown capabilities of GPT-5, remarked, “Until we go train that model, it’s like a fun guessing game for us... But I can’t tell you here’s exactly what it’s going to do that GPT-4 didn’t."

Empowering custom agents

OpenAI's recent introduction of custom GPTs takes centre stage in Altman's vision. He expressed the company's commitment to making these agents progressively more powerful, with actions becoming increasingly complex. Altman anticipates substantial business value emerging from enhanced capabilities in various domains.

Commenting on the launch of custom GPTs, Altman stated, “We will make these agents more and more powerful, and the actions will get more and more complex from here."

OpenAI envisions users creating personalised versions of ChatGPT, fostering a community of developers who can share their customised AI solutions. A GPT store is set to launch, providing a platform for verified developers to monetise their contributions.
