The latest Apple AirPods (3rd generation) outshine the 2nd generation in many aspects. They have an IPX4 rating, a MagSafe charging case, and support spatial audio. However, they still share the second generation's unsealed fit.

Looks and fits The AirPods (3rd generation) have a new rounded design with shorter stems, offering a comfortable fit on the outer ear. However, the fit at the ear canal entrance is less secure compared to the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation AirPods also boast an IPX4 water-resistant rating, suitable for the gym, a feature the 2nd generation lacks.

Sensors The AirPods (3rd gen) have upgraded sensors for better play/pause functionality with a skin-detect sensor. They also feature a force sensor on the stems, similar to AirPods Pro, for controls. Both versions have the H1 chip for hands-free Siri access, enabling tasks like volume adjustment, messaging, and web searches.

AirPods case The 3rd gen AirPods case is like the AirPods Pro case, sturdier and MagSafe-compatible. In contrast, if f you want wireless charging in 2nd gen AirPods you have to pay a bit extra. The 2nd gen comes in two versions, but they're still more budget-friendly than the 3rd gen.

Bluetooth codecs that AirPods support Connection quality shines for both AirPods when linked to an iPhone, thanks to the energy-efficient H1 chip and swift pairing. They're recognised by all your Apple devices on the same iCloud account, enabling easy auto-connect and seamless device switching.

Battery life The AirPods (3rd gen) excel in battery life. At 75 dB (SPL), the 2nd gen runs for 4 hours, 7 minutes, while the 3rd gen lasts 6 hours, 21 minutes. This battery boost extends to the cases: the 3rd gen adds four charge cycles for over 30 hours, while the 2nd gen case gives nearly four extra charges, totaling just over 24 hours of battery life.
