As the social media giant is expected to get a complete overhauls in terms of its brand identity and logo, let's take a look at the evolution of the 'Blue Bird' as it might say goodbye to its users in a few days.
Twitter was launched on March 21, 2006, by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. The first Twitter bird logo was created by Simon Oxley, an English artist. The logo featured a simple, cute, and minimalistic blue bird.
In 2012, the original bird logo was replaced with the "Larry the Bird" logo. The logo gained its name from the legendary Boston Celtics basketball player, Larry Bird. The updated logo featured a sleeker, streamlined bird with fewer details.
In 2019, Twitter made a subtle change to the logo, removing the bird's feathers and making it a hollow silhouette. This change gave the logo a cleaner and more modern appearance, while still retaining its iconic identity.
In January 2021, Twitter made another update to its logo by removing the lowercase "t" from its previous "Twitter" wordmark. The decision to remove the text was aimed at simplifying the logo and making it more versatile.
On October 27, 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter for a whopping $44 billion after months of negotiation. Since taking over, Elon has made drastic changes to the platform.
On 23 July 2023, Elon announced his plans to rebrand the platform. In a tweet, he mentioned that they will bid farewell to the Twitter brand, including the bird logo, and gradually phase out references to birds altogether.
